Tour Itinerary
Day 1: (D)
Brisbane to Roma
Sun 3 Aug 25
Welcome to our tour to Lightning Ridge and Moree. Our journey features a portion of the Great Artesian Drive. Ancient in its creation, the Great Artesian Basin is one of the largest artesian freshwater resources in the world. Artesian water is underground water confined and pressurised within a porous and permeable geological formation and here in the North West, the waters are generally 38˚C. Great to soak away those aches and pains and rejuvenate the body! We have a travel day ahead as we make our way to Roma for our overnight stay.
Day 2 : (BLD)
Roma to Lightning Ridge
Mon 4 Aug 25
Leaving Roma, we travel to Nindigully Pub for an early lunch. “The Gully”, is Queensland’s oldest hotel located in its original conditions and position. From the late 1800s, the pub was a Cobb and Co Coach change over station before becoming what it is today. We stop in Thallon to view the incredible silo titled ‘The Watering Hole’. The mural portrays the Thallon district – featuring the Moonie River, an amazing sunset and the area’s agricultural base. It also recognises members of Thallon’s indigenous community by the inclusion of a scarred tree. We then travel through Dirranbandi and Hebel before arriving in Lightning Ridge. With its stark and scarred landscape, this town has a peculiar fascination for visitors. Famous for magnificent opals, the town is home to the unique black opal, a rare and luminous gem mined from the surrounding plains. It is the only place in Australia (and one of the few places in the world) where the highly prized opal is found. We visit Down to Earth Opals, who mine, design and specialise in selling to the world one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces and top gem quality loose solid opals.
Day 3: (BLD)
Lightning Ridge and Goodooga
Tue 5 Aug 25
Today, we are joined by a local guide for a town tour. We’ll see the historic Three Mile Flat – site of early opal miners’ camp and the largest open cut opal mine in NSW – Lunatic Hill. We’ll also view the largest opal agitator ever built and visit the historic Bottle House and Amigos Castle. Following lunch, we head out of town to Goodooga, where we visit the Great Artesian Baths and experience the healing power of hot springs while enjoying the stunning outback surrounds. Balneotherapy – bathing in mineral waters – has been known to reduce stress, promote sleep and relieve pain and has been used for thousands of years. After a relaxing afternoon, we drive back to Lightning Ridge. Tonight, we are in for a treat at the Australian Opal Centre, beneath a vast night sky for SPARK. The cinematic experience is a celebration of the natural, cultural and technological heritage of Lightning Ridge opal fields, their opal and people.
Day 4: (BD)
Lightning Ridge
Wed 6 Aug 25
This morning, we visit The Hidden Gem, a unique off grid art camp originally built by acclaimed local artist John Murray. Here we are hosted by award winning entertainers, Mel and Susie, known as Australian Champion Bush Poets and Yarnspinners. We enjoy a delicious morning tea and a comic tour of this amazing property. After lunch in town, we visit the John Murray Art Gallery. Wandering around the gallery, John’s artistic talent becomes apparent with his pieces filled with light and humour. It’s clear he likes to make people smile and enjoy his creations!
Day 5: (BLD)
Lightning Ridge to Moree
Thu 7 Aug 25
This morning, we leave Lightning Ridge and head to Walgett where on arrival we visit the Water Tower Mural. The story behind this mural is the life of Jimmy Little, a celebrated and beloved Australian Aboriginal musician, actor and advocate whose career spanned six decades. Nearby we stop at the town’s Artesian Bore Bath. We continue our journey, stopping along the way at Burren Junction Artesian Bore Bath before arriving in Moree. Located in the beautiful Gwydir Valley, Moree is a place of relaxation and rejuvenation.
Day 6: (BD)
Moree
Fri 8 Aug 25
This morning, we meet our local guide who will introduce us to their quaint country town including the impressive historical buildings and rich history of the town. We then uncover one of the region’s agricultural successes, cotton. We will be guided around one of the many cotton farms where the cotton is picked and packed ready for transporting to the Cotton Gin. After time in town to purchase lunch, we spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing at the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre.
Day 7: (BL)
Moree to Brisbane
Sat 9 Aug 25
With our bags packed full of memories we begin our travel day home. We travel through Goondiwindi before reaching Millmerran where we stop for lunch at The Mill Inn Tavern. Our afternoon is spent on the coach, arriving home late afternoon from a wonderful tour.
