Brisbane to Rockhampton

Welcome to our incredible tour to Queensland’s Gulf Country. Our tour will take us through the fantastic rural towns of Emerald and Charters Towers to the coast where we relax in Karumba before heading to Cobbold Gorge and Townsville. What an adventure! After our morning coach pick-ups, we are transferred to Roma Street Train Station for our journey on the Tilt Train. Sit back and enjoy the smooth and comfortable ride to Rockhampton. On arrival, we are transferred to our motel for our welcome dinner.

Rockhampton to Emerald

This morning we express to the Gemfields! At Rubyvale, we visit Miner’s Heritage, Australia’s largest underground sapphire mine. We enjoy a guided walk-in mine tour, discover the process of sapphire mining and be amazing at the array of colours. Our lunch is included here. We make our way to Emerald, where we visit Emerald Pioneer Cottage, which houses photos, memorabilia and models of the old town centre and is arguably the finest building in the area. We see Fossilised Wood, estimated to be 250 million years old and the heritage listed railway station before arriving at our motel.

Emerald to Charters Towers

Our journey today takes us north – through the Blackwood National Park. We travel north to the coal mining town of Clermont which was relocated after the devastating 1916 flood. We leave the murals of Clermont and travel to Belyando Crossing, a very remote service station, where we’ll stop for our picnic lunches. We push through to Charters Towers, our home for the next two nights. Founded in 1871 after the discovery of a gold nugget, Charters Towers was established as a place for prospectors to find their fortune in the gold fields. In the following 36 years, they turned up over 200 tonnes of gold.

Be ready with your cowboy hat and boots as we visit the legendary Texas Longhorns! Our Safari Tour introduces us to the longhorns before a camp oven damper and billy tea, served from a genuine cowboy chuck wagon. We return to Charters Towers township to experience a personalised city tour as our knowledgeable local guide highlights many significant sites and facts about the glittering town’s history. We enjoy lunch at a café in the iconic Stock Exchange Arcade before heading out to explore the Venus Gold Battery, where our guide offers an insight into the amazing gold rush era!

Charters Towers to Cloncurry

We have a travel day on the coach as we continue through Hughenden and Richmond to Cloncurry, which has the name for being Australia’s hottest spot during summer and as the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Cloncurry to Karumba

This morning we visit John Flynn Place to uncover the story of the RFDS and John Flynn’s vision to create a mantle of safely for the people of the outback. There is an art gallery, cultural centre and RFDS museum located here. Another travel day ahead as we make our way to Karumba on the edge of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Tonight, we dine at the Sunset Tavern, a wonderful spot to enjoy dinner and absorb the evening’s beauty.

Day 7: (BLD)

After a relaxed morning, we visit the Barramundi Discovery Centre. Enjoying a morning tea here, we meet our guide who will unveil the life cycle of the Barramundi. Take the opportunity to taste some of the ‘swimming locals’ at Ash’s @ the Point Café before time at leisure. This evening, make sure you have your camera packed as we board the Crab & Croc Cruise. Watch the sky turn into pops of bright colours upon the reflective waters, while sipping on a glass of wine with nibbles. Sunsets are renowned in this area and tonight we will see why!

Karumba to Forsayth

We make our way to Normanton and enjoy the sights before boarding The Gulflander to Critters Camp. The historic train takes us on a journey ‘from nowhere to nowhere’. We are back on the open road with the coach this afternoon as we make our way to Forsayth. Tonight, we uncover mystery and intrigue on the Forsayth by Night Lantern Tour. The walking tour will give us an overview of the town’s history from settlement to present day and you can expect a few surprises along the way. With incredible storytelling and technology, the history of Forsayth is brought to life.

Today we immerse ourselves in the natural wonder of this truly unique part of the outback and explore the amazing Cobbold Gorge. Set within rugged sandstone formations, we experience the uniqueness of the narrow gorge with its majestic and sheer walls aboard a custom-made, electric powered boat. Gliding along in almost eerie silence, you’ll find yourself keeping an eye out for the resident freshwater crocodiles. This will be an unforgettable highlight of the trip! We return to the Village for lunch before our next adventure. Ever wondered about life on a working cattle station? There is no better opportunity to get a taste of outback Queensland than from an insider’s view of Robin Hood Station. After a special day exploring this truly unique part of Australia, we return to Forsayth.

Forsayth to Townsville

Saying goodbye to this incredible place, we travel through Conjuboy and Greenvale, stopping to enjoy our packed lunch. We arrive in Townsville, our home for our final two nights on tour together.

This morning we visit the Museum of Tropical Queensland, a world class facility showcasing the history and heritage of the region. Learn about the fascinating story of HMS Pandora, the ship sent to capture the Bounty mutineers, only to be wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef in 1791. Our afternoon is spent at Billabong Sanctuary to enjoy a guided tour of one of Australia’s best interactive wildlife parks. It covers 26 acres of natural bushland, tropical rainforest and expansive wetlands. Crocodiles, eels, pythons, dingos, cassowaries and koalas are some of the residents you may see here. Our dinner venue, the Townsville Yacht Club, offers sweeping views across the marina.
