Finding New Life on the Road

When Queensland Veteran, John Butler, walked into his local RSL Sub‑Branch office one morning, he never imagined a simple question would change the course of his life. His RSL Welfare Supervisor asked whether he’d like to join a Blue Bus Tour to Norfolk Island. Her husband was thinking of going too. His answer was simple: “If you go, I will go.”

“This trip changed my life in an amazing way.”

Living with PTSD, anxiety, and periods of depression, John boarded the bus unsure of what the journey would bring. What he found was something far more powerful than a holiday — he found connection, support, and a community that embraced him.

Surrounded by 28 women who welcomed him wholeheartedly, he rediscovered joy, laughter, confidence, and a sense of belonging. When he returned home, his family, friends, and even his psychologist were astonished by the transformation.

“Where have you been?”
“I’ve been on a Blue Bus Tour — and it changed me.”

That first tour sparked a new chapter. His psychologist asked what he planned to do next. His answer was immediate: “Book on a lot more Blue Bus Tours!”

And he did — 24 tours in just three years, each one strengthening his mental wellbeing and widening his social world.

Why He Keeps Coming Back

What draws him back to Blue Bus Tours again and again is simple: the comfort of the  luxury coach and genuine human connection. He speaks warmly of:

  • The friendly, supportive passengers
  • The experienced driver who knows every scenic backroad
  • The hostess who makes every traveller feel at home
  • Morning teas in the park
  • A bus designed for comfort, accessibility, community and ease

“Other tour companies? The difference is chalk and cheese — Blue Bus Tours caps them all.”

His most cherished memory remains that first, life‑changing trip to Norfolk Island. But many others have followed:

  • A deeply personal return to Williamtown and the old Gan Gan Military Camp
  • The Tasmania Tour by bus and ferry
  • The Cooktown & North Queensland adventure
  • The Backroads, Silos, Kabloom & Melbourne Flower Show

Each journey has added meaning, connection, and joy to his life.

“Blue Bus Tours isn’t just travel — it’s healing, friendship, and a new beginning.”
